My Euphorbia Leuconeura, or more commonly known as a Madagascar Jewel is by far the fastest growing plant in my collection. She really is popping out leaves like there’s no tomorrow! When I first got her I wondered how long it will take till she was fully grown so that I can sit underneath her leaves. At this speed it might not take that long!
With my “Meet The Family” series of posts I will be introducing you to my plants and tell you a little bit more about the story behind each plant. I will also attempt to share more about my plant care, and how the plant responds to the conditions in our apartment.
She is not one of my favourite plants, but she most certainly is one of my most fascinating plants. To be honest I only bought her to fill up my cart so that I could get to free shipping when placing my first order with Plnts.com back in March. I didn’t know anything about her before getting her and in the past this has really proven to be a problem in terms of keeping the plant alive. I didn’t really know where to put her when she arrived and she didn’t like the South facing window in my plant corner. I moved her to our bedroom windowsill and she just started growing like crazy.
She is pushing out new leaves one after the other and in the past two or three months has more than doubled in size. The new leaves are also massive! She got so top heavy that I had to move her into a pot that was a few sizes bigger because she kept toppling over. She is now almost too big for the windowsill and I have to find a new spot for her. I’ve read online that she can grow as big as 1.8m and I am totally here for that!
I have been asked what my secret is to getting her to grow so fast and I have absolutely no idea. I didn’t give her any fertilizer up until a few weeks ago so she must just really love the amount of light from the window she’s in. I’ve read that they prefer partial shade so you might just have to figure out what amount of light your plant needs. They aren’t as susceptible to over watering, but I do try to water her sparingly. Mine tends to droop when she needs a drink but perks back up in a few hours after watering so I let her tell me when it’s time. I don’t really mist her, but I do pay attention to cleaning her leaves as they do accumulate some dust over time.
Other than being a bit dramatic when she’s thirsty she has been really easy to care for. If you are looking for a plant that will wow you in terms of growth I can recommend adding this one to your collection. Be aware however that she creates a white liquid that is toxic.
